From the inception of the L.H. Jones Family Resource Center, the ever increasing senior population of Surry County mandated the establishment of a senior center. Through the efforts of Yadkin Valley Economic Development Administration, a work plan was formulated to develop the Surry County Senior Center at the L.H. Jones Family Resource Center. A Senior Center Advisory Council was formed in early 1995. The first meeting of the Senior Center Advisory Council was on April 4, 1995. Representatives from county agencies serving the senior population were invited to be a part of the first Advisory Council meeting.

In June 1995, Maxine Reynolds became our first Senior Center Coordinator. Through the efforts of the Advisory Council and the Senior Center Coordinator, the center was organized. The first senior center meeting was held on August 15, 1995, and has continued to meet monthly since that time.

The Surry County Senior Center was established for senior adults to have a place to go to for self-enrichment, education, health and wellness programs, such as health screenings, exercise, socialization, recreation, volunteerism and information and referral services. It is a place where a senior who lives alone can go to get involved in group activities or simply relax, a place that affords an opportunity for seniors’ input in their own community’s issues, a place to help the older adult stay active and healthy, enjoying old friends and meeting new friends. Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between older adult’s mental and physical well being through involvement after retirement. Therefore, the aim of the Surry County Senior Center is to continue to involve as many of the Surry County Seniors as we can in group activities and other beneficial services.

Annalisa Davis, Center Director, is a 2007 Graduate of the Ann Johnson Institute of Senior Center Management. The Surry County Senior Center is a North Carolina Certified Senior Center of Excellence, the highest level of achievement for senior centers in the state.

The center is currently funded by the County of Surry, the State of North Carolina, United Fund of Greater Mt. Airy, contributions, fund raisers and community use fees.

SENIOR FUN DAY AT THE PARK will be hosted by The Senior Centers of Surry County once again this year. It is sponsored by Food Lion and this year we are blessed to have Home Instead Senior Care & Mountain Valley Hospice on board as partners as well. This fun-filled annual event for adults age 50 and older will be held on Tuesday, August 28th from 2-4:30pm at Veterans Park in Mount Airy at the Grandstand. It features live entertainment by The Carolina Nights Band, as well as an afternoon of laughs hanging out with "Bob" from 109 U-Pull-It. There will also be a performance by the award winning "Surry Steppers" as well as various contests to enter. Light refreshments and water will also be available. Admission and parking is FREE. Contest prizes & various door prizes will be given out compliments of Food Lion. You must be present to win ALL prizes. Our grand prize (rocker) has graciously been donated once again by Brannock & Hiatt Furniture & the drawing will be at 4:00pm. For your health, wellness & safety needs the Mt Airy PD will be on site providing useful information as well as giving you the opportunity to "drop off an dispose" of old & unwanted medications in an appropriate manner, so please be prepared. Due to an extreme amount of cases of "whooping cough" being reported in the surrounding areas the Health & Nutrition Center will also be on site offering FREE TDaP vaccinations. No outside chairs are allowed. Adequate seating is provided. So grab your friends and come on out. You won't want to miss all the action. We will be "Off Our Rockers And Having a Ball"...SEE YOU THERE !

AARP DRIVER SAFETY CLASS will be offered at the Surry County Senior Center August 29th 2012 from 12-4pm. This classroom driver refresher course is for adults 50 and older. Join us to learn useful information such as how changes in vision, hearing, and reaction times effect driving as you age and safety tips for handling these changes and more. You will also discover defensive driving techniques ...and strategies to handle aggressive drivers and challenging situations such as left hand turns, right-of-way issues, interstate highway traffic, large vehicles and blind spots as well as the proper way to use anti-lock brakes, air bags, and safety belts. Cost for the class is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non members. A special "Educator Appreciation" promotional discount is also being extended to current or retired educators and school personnel at a rate of only $5.00 for the class. This is offered to those individuals who have been an educator, or have worked for the school district, church or university in ANY capacity. Please make plans to join us. Some insurance providers offer discounts to individuals who can show proof of successfully completing this course. Check with your provider to see if you qualify & take advantage of this great opportunity to learn more while possibly saving money too. Pre-Registration is preferred.
